30 k + 40 k = a lot of biking

Yesterday, I was flying down a winding road next to a deep gorge in Provence and I thought: This is amazing. I saw wild poppies blooming by the side of the road. Wow, I thought. I saw olive trees and vineyards aplenty. Suddenly the fact that my cell phone will not be able to charge anymore and that my Palm Zire has suddenly given up the ghost didn't worry me as much anymore.

I'm onto the biking tour of Provence part of my adventure and so far, it's amazing. The company is Duvine Adventures, and they really lay it all out. Seriously, if you are planning to do a bike tour anywhere, check them out. We've been staying at the Vieux Castillon du Gard, in Castillon du Gard, a small medieval village in Provence. It's at the top of a tall hill, which means that at the end of the day, we have a lovely long climb to make us feel that we really earned our spectacular dinner. And we are well-protected from any invading army, so there's that.

The hotel is incredible. It was originally seven separate houses, but someone bought them up and converted them into a beautiful hotel. My room is enormous, with light cream walls and pale blue ceiling beams and a bathroom that is about the size of my bedroom in Toronto. And now that the dove that was cooing all night long just outside my bedroom window seems to have found another place to roost, it's perfect.

Yesterday we did a short cycle (only about 30 km) out to the Pont du Gard. Today, we cycled to Uzès, passing fields of poppies and almond trees, and feeling the burn as we climbed hill after hill ("rolling hills," Greg, one of the guides says. I thought that rolling meant up and down -- there sure seemed to be a lot of up!). There was a delicious lunch in Uzès and a surprise rosé-tasting on the way back. I may have been a little tipsy before getting back on that bike. I even at an olive and didn't hate it.

Another great meal tonight, then I might take a swim in the bathtub, then off to sleep in a super comfy bed. Tomorrow we're off to Les Baux de Provence.

It's a pretty good life, this week.
