The return of Photo a Day: April

After a bit of a hiatus, I've finally finished a month of Fat Mum Slim's photo a day. Writing the prompts on the monthly calendar seems to be the key to not forgetting to look at the prompts.

Here is May's list if you want to play along. I'm hoping to work the prompts in with Me-May May, but I'm not sure how well that will go, since I also want to take my photos in different places around the city.

Bedazzled

I've been examining my me-mades/refashions in preparation for Me-Made May '13, in particular my earring collection, and I realized that I could wear a different pair of earrings, without repeating myself, for nearly three months! That's not counting the fancy-pants sparkly stuff, either.

They say the first step is admitting you may have a problem.

Four scarves, that is. And one sneaky winter scarf. Only two of which are currently completely finished, but if I wait to finish all of them I will never put this post up.

Not that Pacino... Early Renaissance Art at the AGO

Wednesday nights at the AGO are free^* after 6:30, and as a result the tickets to special exhibits are half-price, so the DC and I took advantage to see Revealing the Early Renaissance. Illuminated manuscripts? Yes, please.

In which PhysicsGirl's mind is agreeably engaged: P&P #11

Vanity and Vexation: A Novel of Pride and Prejudice by Kate Fenton (published in Britain as Lions and Liquorice, which title has been on my reading list, making it a tad challenging to find, and which I think I like better - trust me, it makes sense when you read the book).

I really liked this book, which is a modern, gender-swapped version of Pride and Prejudice. The correspondences are initially quite subtle, mostly because the "Bennet" characters are not related, and all of them are in drag, so to speak, so they were a fun surprise when I recognized them.

So, Llew Bevan is an impecunious thriller novelist living in a small Yorkshire village where not-the-BBC are filming a televised serial of Pride and Prejudice. His neighbour John falls into an affair with the lead actress, while he finds himself drawn to the stern director, Mary Dance. The familiar shenanigans unfold in not-so-familiar ways. First published in 1995, I wonder if it was inspired by the BBC/A&E series. Also, the lack of cell phone and internet use is slightly jarring at first. I mean, they use public phone booths! With coins! And send faxes!

I'm still reading that second sequel, by the way, but I had put this on hold at the library and it came in. I just meant to glance into it, honest.

Sigh.

MMM13: This can't end well...

I warned you...

I, aem² of PhysicsGirl on the Loose, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '13. I endeavour to wear at least one handmade/refashioned garment or accessory at least 3-4 days per week for the duration of May 2013.

Accesories will include jewellery, scarves, shoes, bags, etc. Or are shoes garments? Whatever. I am also hoping to crochet at least one new item and sew one completely new item to wear by the end of the month. I'd like to promise no repeats, but I don't have enough spring/summer-only stuff to make it work. I will try to count my key lariat only once, though, since I wear that every workday. And also, I will finish it. In fact, in order to meet this goal, there are a fair number of UFOs/projects that will have to be moved from the "planning" and "working on" piles into the "finished" pile, so this is the kick in the pants I need.

I will be taking daily photos, but I think I will only post weekly summaries so's you can skip those posts if you want to.

Pancake of the Month: Strawberry-Vanilla

It is not yet strawberry season, but the DC was swayed by a sale in Chinatown and surprised me with two big containers after a full day of dancing at Swing Goes to the Movies. We easily dispatched the first container by pairing them with vanilla ice cream. But what to do with the second container? Pancakes, natch.

A quick Google search turned up this recipe on Allrecipes.com. Sounds yummy, no? By the by, I especially love the comments about how "that's a heck of a lot of vanilla, so I cut it back to 1 tsp, like in other recipes." Good lord, people. It is a lot of vanilla, but that's sort of the point.

Anyway... the result?

The Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy by Pamela Aiden: An Assembly Such as This, Duty and Desire, and These Three Remain.

So, I really meant to pace myself with this challenge. One book/movie/audiobook a month. Nice and steady. No need to get it all done right away, right? Even if I have shown myself to be a wee bit of an overachiever in the past?

I was in the middle of reading the second sequel to P&P by another author when I got a hold of this trilogy. It's been on my reading list for years. I dipped into it, just for a second, you know, just to see how it was. Then I just kept right on reading. And I'm still in the middle of the other sequel.
