Pareidolia

I learned a new word this week, and I need to share it. To quote my friend Craig: "It's a situation where you interpret a random pattern as meaningful. Examples are seeing animals in clouds, a face on Mars, Mary on a grilled cheese sandwich, etc."

This is about several random somethings. Is there a pattern?

First things first: on the picture front, I got two more days of my museum week done. I went to the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay one day, and climbed the bell tower at Notre Dame, saw the Archeological Crypte, the Conciergerie, and Sainte Chapelle the next. They are in this album (click on the title below the photo to go to the album and scroll to the picture):

(Warning: I had a bit of fun with non-Photoshop in some of the photos. Hee.)

Additional walking tours from those days start here:

That leaves three days from the museum week to do. Unfortunately, those are the pictures that haven't been renamed and resized yet, which is a pretty time-consuming process. However, I plan to get most, if not all, of them done by the end of this long weekend.
In other news...

A tweet from George Stroumboulopoulos got me to sign up for stem cell donation at OneMatch. I got a call that I can expect my buccal swab pack in the mail within the next two weeks. It's really easy to get on the registry, and it's really important. The more people they have registered, the better the chance that someone will find a match. Go sign up.

I figured out how to leave the underground garage at school without having a car. The door is opened from the inside by a pressure switch on the ground, but the bike isn't heavy enough to open it. The first week, I spent some time pushing on various cables and metal plates on the ground and looking for buttons to push before giving up in frustration. The only egress, I thought, was to hope a car would leave right before me, or to use the pedestrian side door which is ... not bike friendly. To exit the garage, I had to climb a step, prop the heavy door open with my body while simultaneously pulling the laden bike up the step and through the door, which would never open quite wide enough to accommodate both me and the bike at the same time. Which made propping it open with my body a challenge. Let's just say torque hasn't been my friend there. I did find the button to manually open the garage door, but until I grow a foot taller, it won't be of much help. However, I am nothing if not persistent and realized that I needed to stomp quickly on the cable. Leaving school does now not have me muttering horrible things.

I had my annual physical this week. Sign of impending age: the doctor has told me that next year I get to start mammograms. Joy. Naturally, my first response was "But will they fit?"

Lovely Bicycle reviewed the Burnside pannier from Philosophy Bags. Once again, I fell in lust. After some hemming and hawing, and not a little cajoling from a cousin on Facebook, I decided to buy it. It's being sent UPS, and online tracking has allowed me to obsess on a whole new level. The Easter long weekend is teaching me patience. (It was in Concord, Ontario, a mere few hours away, by midnight on Friday; and yet it won't be delivered until Tuesday. I want it yesterday. Patience is required.)

After reading about it on A Year From Scratch, I signed up for The Barter Babes Project. I bartered a physics lesson in return for a financial session, which I had yesterday. Shannon was really lovely and gave me some good advice. If you're a lady living in Toronto, you should check it out!

A few months ago, I tried to make yogurt in my crock pot, as per A Year of Slow Cooking. What I got wasn't so much yogurt as soup, but I think that's because my apartment was a wee bit cold for the resting period, even wrapped in a blanket. I tried it again but this time it spent the night in the pre-heated oven. Result? Yogurt! Yay! It's still a bit liquidy, but straining it makes it thicker (and gives me whey to use in muffins). Next time I might try adding some powdered milk to help thicken it.
