...and it sets off a cascade of dominoes...
I love Rube Goldberg machines. I think they are a brilliant mix of physics, engineering, and creativity. What is a Rube Goldberg machine, you ask? Allow the kooks at Mythbusters to explain it to you (the actual explanation starts at 0:33):
Oh, I'm sorry. Did you actually want to see the machine? Yeah, the Discovery clips are like that.
Anyway, I thought I'd share some of my favourite web RG machines.
Cog. The classic Honda commercial. Unfortunately for all their hard work, people saw it and said "Meh, neat CGI."
OK Go have made many cool and innovative videos; here is the RG version of This Too Shall Pass
The Mythbusters, naturally, got into the act with Mentos and Diet Coke. This version has the added bonus of giving you the British announcer and Danish subtitles.
The next one is called The Best RG Machine Ever, which sounds a bit over the top, but then, so is the machine. It's pretty epic.
This last one has a photography theme and is also Toronto-based. It has sweet little references to both the OK Go and the Cog videos. And a motherload of gorilla tripods.
(Go the the 2D Photography blog to see more stuff about how it was made, including a video of what's going on in the "photobooth." And yes, it is totally SFW.)
