FESA15 final report card -- sort of

At this time of year, I'm usually pulling together report cards for first term. I'm not exactly missing that piece of fun, but it does seem fitting to grade myself on my FESA15 plan and execution. Marks are awarded for finishing on time and the quality of the final product; process mistakes don't count if I've fixed them. Items that were already cut out are scored only out of 10 since that part usually takes me as long as the rest of it.

But before I get into details, here's the thing: I haven't sewn anything since the middle of October. My childhood home is on the market, and helping Aged P sort out 53 years' worth of house has been more exhausting than I anticipated. Days where I didn't help her were pretty much spent in my jammies catching up on my 50 book pledge.

I am even missing blog posts for things I did complete but haven't finished writing up *cough*wedding dress*cough*. I decided to go ahead and post this anyway (timey-wimey-wise) and rescue the others from draft when I have time and pictures.

On with the report card!

Fashionable Foundations for Frosty Weather

Denim Simplicity 2451 (tulip) for tea with P & C Sept. 12
Technically on time. I did start this one an evening earlier than the challenge technically started and I had all-but-hem and some topstitching done by the time we left for tea with my pals. I wore it anyway and finished it later that evening. Grade 8/10. I'm giving myself some leeway here because figuring out the topstitching took a while and because I forgot that I'd already solved the waist fitting issue.

Polka dot Simplicity 2451 (trumpet) for the wedding shower Sept 26.
On time Early. Due to finishing the sewing part of the wedding dress a lot earlier than I planned (and having to wait a week before I could start embroidering), I had plenty of time to pop this out a whole two weeks before the shower. The fit in the back could be better, but what the eye don't see, the heart don't grieve over. Grade: 8.5/10

Tan check Thurlows for Thanksgiving Oct 11/12.
[no picture yet]
A few days late. I did manage to finish these to wear to the second day of seminars at the Creativ Festival That blog post has been percolating for a while because I have Things To Say and needed to cool off and tame the language -- nothing to do with the trousers. Although I do need to actually take pictures of the trousers, so there's that. The fit is so much better, although I've just realized why the waistband isn't sitting properly and I suspect the back still has issues. Grade: 7/10.

Tan twill or denim Lekala swirl skirt: October 17; Jalie jeans for Chris Hadfield's Generator on Oct 28; Wearing History Smooth Sailing trousers for Postmodern Jukebox for Nov. 16.
Not submitted. I'll get the fabric for these this week. Pinky swear.

Chic Chemises for Cool Climates
Breton Renfrew, for the Cabbagetown Festival, Sept. 13.
On time. Even though we didn't end up going to the festival because it was cold and rainy. Grade: 7/10 due to some fitting issues and unmatched stripes on one underarm seam. However, I've worn it a number of times since making it.

Refashioners challenge blouse, Sept. 26.
Not submitted. I didn't even get around to buying the shirt. This was a bonus assignment anyway, and my plans were for a not-cold-weather blouse, so it can wait. Maybe I'll get it done before the end of the school year.

Mathilde blouses: Blue, Oct. 20. Sheer Green, Oct. 23; Dana cowl sweater, November 14
Not submitted. These will get done, I swear. I've got Madeline Tosh yarn waiting for that Dana.

Fabulous Frocks

A Very Special Anna: sewn by Sept. 13, embroidered by Sept. 26th30th; ultimate deadline Oct. 3
Ultimate deadline met. I started this a bit before the official sew-along started, because obviously. I gave myself an extension on the embroidery because of Aged P moving + I got sick + a scheduling snafu meant that I had to leave it to the 29th. Fortunately, embroidering the dress itself took about one hour. I love that machine! There were a few fitting issues with the bodice. You can see a preview at Danielle's site. Grade: 81/100.

Meet the family Lolita Sugarplum, Sept 27.
Late. No way around it. It was a technical sew, and I'm glad I didn't half-ass it. But it isn't the best fit, for all that. Hasn't stopped me from wearing it to Thanksgving dinner, Postmodern Jukebox, or shopping. Grade: 30/50.

Those Toasty Nights

The DC's modified Tofino flannel pjs. October 31
[no photo]
Early - but incomplete. Sigh. I needed to move these up because the poor lad (may I call him my husband? because I can, now?) didn't have any lounge pants and it's too cold for what he usually wears around the house. We did a trial fit of my Tofinos before I put the elastic in and he said "Great! just add five inches to the top." Which I did. And they were finished by Thanksgiving... except they aren't. Because they don't fit. I need to dig through my scraps and add gussets. Grade: 5/10

Underneath It All
Not submitted I'm planning to alter the crinoline from aged P's wedding dress so I can wear it with my poofy swing dresses. Future projects.

Tender Tootsies
Shirley's socks: Thanksgiving (Oct 10/11)
(Still) incomplete. Someday, my friends. Someday. I will bring this project to heel.*

Baby It's Cold Outside
Bolero jacket from Aged P's wedding dress: October 3 (bonus)
Not submitted. The weather did forecast it, but I didn't have time. I'd still like to do this, though, in the interest of using up every last bit of that dress.

Mitts out of a moth-eaten cashmere sweater: December 1.
Not submitted. Yeah, yeah. It's not even Dec 1 yet, but they're not going to happen before the end of the year.

Beautiful baubles for brisk banlieues
Wedding earrings galore: September 27/30/October 3.

On time. I even got them to everyone early enough that they could show up at City Hall wearing them. Sadly, the hoops on the Byzantine drops are a bit of an issue, which brings down the mark a bit, and I need to practice my jigwork, but I'm really, really pleased with how the earrings I wore during the day turned out. Blogged here. Plus I also made my bouquet, hair flower, and a last-minute purse. Grade: 38/50.

Average grade based on completed work: 75%
Comments: This is where in reports I usually say something encouraging like "PGotL had a fairly strong start but due to external factors many assignments have not been submitted. She should see me to arrange making up the missing work." I could say that it's technically Autumn until Dec.21, so, you know, I have time to finish a few of them, but it's not going to happen. There is still house stuff to deal with and I've got a few Xmas/birthday gifts to crochet first. I refuse to beat myself up over this because I'm on leave and it's a hobby and I'm supposed to be enjoying myself here. I made 15 1/2 things, they look fairly good, and I'm pretty darned proud of myself.

Repeat until convinced.

*Hah. See what I did there?

  1. Why would you even think of beating yourself up. You accomplished a lot and during very stressful times. Weddings and helping pack up your childhood home? Other than a death, those are both high stress things. I think you should sit back a revel in your accomplishments!

    1. Well, we're always hardest on ourselves, right?
