We still don't have anything suitable to eat today

Happy Tau Day, all!

School is over for the summer, and I'm working through my backlog of posts-to-be-posted. I know you are all on tenterhooks.

Banana split for my baby, and a bunch of Sorbettos for me...

I love free stuff. Especially free crochet or sewing patterns -- that way if I mess up, I'm only out the cost of the materials. When Me-Made-May rolled around, I thought I should take the plunge and make some tops, but I wanted something super easy and quick. And cheap. Enter the Colette Sorbetto. I made three incarnations, or scoops, if you will.

Here is some music to accompany your reading.

First scoop: black sesame Sorbetto

black
This is a wearable muslin made of black cotton. I cut the size 0, and the fit is mostly okay. The bust darts and the armscyes are too high; enough for me to notice, but not enough for it to be completely unwearable. I used French seams everywhere. I love French seams when the construction is simple. This is my first time using bias tape binding and for some reason the neckline binding is sticking up at the front neck instead of lying flat. Any helpful suggestions would be gratefully received.

Upon my word... Darcy must speak for himself: P&P #14-18

Mr. Darcy's Diary, Dear Mr. Darcy, A Darcy Christmas, Pride and Pyramids: Mr. Darcy in Egypt, and Wickham's Diary by Amanda Grange

Exams are marked, the marks are in, it's all over but the unearthing of my desk from beneath the mountains of accumulated papers (VPs take note: I need Friday afternoon preps for desk-cleaning purposes because otherwise it will never get done). And we're back on track for this challenge.

Hem. I may have taken the concept of overkill to new heights, here.

You will not be surprised to hear that I read Mr. Darcy's Diary in March (when I was supposed to be reading that other book), but when I found out that Amanda Grange had written about a billion more P&P books, I put off reviewing it until I had read them*, which I didn't want to do until school ended. They were pretty quick reads, especially the last three. I'm covering five books, so this review is going to be really long, even by my standards.

Are you all sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin.

Oh, for an egg tart!

custard tart
I love the pastel de nata, or Portuguese egg tart. It is one of the simple joys of living in this neighbourhood. The DC and I often go to an all-night Portuguese bakery near Dovercourt House post-dancing, and it's my treat of choice. On Saturday night, the place where we ate our pe de torresmo had sold out of the tarts, but we weren't worried. Hyedie, of let's-ride-a-bike-and-then-eat-delicious-things fame, and others on the Ward 18 cycling committee organized a ride on Sunday that would have us both eating the tarts and biking around the ward. I had missed the season opening cupcake ride Saturday, so you know I wasn't going to miss out on this one.

Festing chez soi

I went to the plant nursery Saturday morning and sadly got back too late to be on time for the first Cupcake ride of 2013, so I did penance by marking a bunch of stuff. I managed to drag myself away for a few hours in the evening to visit the first annual Dundas West Fest. Party in my neighbourhood! I was a little concerned that were so late we would have missed all the good stuff, but I needn't have been.

If you are feeling bored this weekend...

...there is plenty to do!

It's Bike Month in Toronto, and there's a heck of a lot of stuff going on this weekend alone. I was about to write a post listing them all when Hyedie beat me to it. Hop on over to her blog to see what's on.

As for me, I'm up to my eyebrows in marking, but I plan to come up for air to do the Cupcake and Pastel de Nata rides as well as catch part of Dundas West Fest. The DC is a big fan of Brooks, but the show will be around for a couple of weeks, so we'll go later.

And if you've never had a Portuguese egg tart? Well, it's kind of like this.

Photo-a-day: May

If you've been reading my Me-Made May posts, you've seen all these photos already. I have to say I'm really looking forward to a) not having to do verbal gymnastics to get the prompts to fit the locations and b) not being in all the photos. As always, if you wait long enough, you will see the previous month's pictures.

June's list is here, if you want to play along.
