I've been mostly head-down marking labs and tests, but I'm taking a wee break for the quarterlyish check-in on my sewing projects. Before I get to that, it's Me-Made-May pledge-time again.

I, aem2 of PhysicsGirl on the Loose, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '14. I will endeavour to wear something me-made every day, with something sewn by me at least five times a week. Further, I will finish any UFOs and wear them at least once by the end of the month.
The point is to challenge yourself, and to up the ante from last year. My avowed challenge last year was to wear something I had made 3-4 times per week, and the secret challenge was to wear something every day, which I did, but only by wearing the heck out of my scarves and careful placement of earrings. I have more sewn-by-me garments this year, so I know I can wear at last one thing I've made every day, and I'm aiming for something I've sewn (or which is a major piece of construction, like a sweater) five times a week. Along with finishing any outstanding UFOs, I'd like to finish a new garment and wear it by the end of the month, but I have a lot of UFOs, so new stuff may go on the back burner. Despite the fact that I've pretty much given up on Fat Mum Slim's monthly photo challenge, I will use the prompts again to help focus the photos. And I will take the photos in different locations around the city, in keeping with the general spirit of this blog. To make it slightly more interesting for you, however, I think I'll try to make a guessing game of it. Where's PhysicsGirl?
So. On to what I have actually accomplished. It doesn't seem like very much. I was really hoping to get one planned item and at least one UFO finished per month. Since January, I've only mostly finished two new items, one unplanned, and definitely one UFO. Sad trombone.
What I have finished since my wrap-up last December: the gravity well dress (although I have yet to add clear elastic to the waist and shoulders as planned) and an unblogged crocheted Lady Sybil cloche, which I was planning to wear to the Downton Abbey costume exhibit, but didn't finish sewing on the appliqué. I did actually finish sewing in the biking flares on the white eyelet sheath, but pictures will have to wait until it's warm enough to wear that dress. I haven't finished any other of the UFOs on my list (although I did sew the buttons back on my Sylvia sweater, but haven't finished the button-hole ribbon).
So, not so good. To be fair, I did come down with food poisoning, but that only accounts for a week or so. I'm just not very good at doing things in bits. All out or nothing, it seems.
I had plans to make a giraffe-spotted blouse for Jungle January, which involves stamping silk. I bought all the materials and pre-washed the silk and have carved all the stamps. That's been done since January, but I haven'thad made the time to do the stamping and steaming. I have cut out the fabric for my NL6000 librarian dress, but it sat waiting for me to finish the tailors tacks on the main pieces for a few days and then I realized I should underline it and then I came across this tutorial (via this very helpful post from Scruffy Badger). So I've bought and cut out the Bemberg lining and have actually sewn it to the main dress pieces, but now I'm trying to press the seams flat and that is proving a bit frustrating. It's already taken me all of Smiley's People and Tinker, Tailor to get this far* and I still have to baste and do the tailor tacks again and dear lord when I can I get to actually sewing the damn thing?
And that has been put aside because I have four, yes you read that correctly, four Dolly Clackett dresses planned, plus some ideas for shoe jewellery. I haven't even cut out the pattern yet. Plus I really want to unpick the seams and finish the horrible V8728 for a dance this Thursday. I be crazy.
Oh, and marks are due on the 15th. So, you know. No problem.
New plan. I was hoping to have at least my first DC dress done by tomorrow, but that seems unlikely since I didn't start it on Thursday as planned and I have too many tests still to mark. So I will wait until after I finish the V8728 for Thursday. That, I will work on in bits and pieces. All that needs to be done is to unpick the underbust and redistribute the gathers, resew the side seams, install a new zipper, and unpick the bias binding on the neckline, make new bias binding and resew. Oh, and hem the sleeves and rehem the bottom. So, you know, everything.
After that, I should manage to have my first DC dress done by the following Monday. Then once marks are in I can spend much time working on the other three. It should be doable, but I can drop one of them if necessary. I have plans for after that, but let's see how I get on with this, shall we?
This might be a good time for the mayor to turn into a snake.**
*I did take many breaks -- I get very bored pinning and cutting out fabric and am often distracted by something shiny. But the movies play on.
**Note that this is meant to be a bit of geekery and not a comment on the current political situation in Toronto, but at this point nothing would surprise me.

If Ford *did* turn into a snake, it would be one of the less newsworthy things he's done. C'mon, you could act the part of Buffy and blow up City Hall (wait, I haven't watched that episode in 10 years….isn't that how it ends??? I've totally lost my geek cred, haven't I?)
ReplyDeleteNot completely. They blew up the school. Which, given my profession, perhaps would be a not so good idea.
