Utilitaire-12 Tasks 13 & 14*: Bike to get a hair cut & a store other than a grocery store = Hair cut (finally), Dolce gelato, & Fluevog shoes
This is a girly post. Hair, gelato, and shoes. You have been warned.
I was really putting off finishing those NY pictures. I'm sure a psychologist would give you a really good reason for that. At any rate, I felt I needed an extra push, so I made an appointment to get my hair done yesterday. Even so, I put them off until the last minute. However. They are done. And so now, finally, is my hair.
After sitting under a heat lamp for about an hour, I went to Dolce gelato, which is right across the street from my hair dresser, to celebrate the May-like temperatures. Their hazelnut and pistachio gelatos are very tasty. I reflected on how this time last year we had very similar weather until a week later, when it was bloody freezing and we got about 10 cm of snow dumped on us. I think I will not pack away my winter boots just yet.
My hair dresser is a genius but she works within walking distance of my apartment, so to make this work for the Utilitaire 3.8 km challenge, I had to tack on another task. Naturally, I went shoe shopping.
I should probably take myself off the Fluevog mailing list. It's monthly temptation in my inbox, and what the eye don't see the heart don't grieve over. Case in point: they are taking 17% off all green shoes until today at midnight. I can never get Fluevogs on sale because my foot size is too popular. And the Hollie shoes I've been eying ever since they came out are olive. Which is green. Which means they are now mine.
I'm just going to count my bank account as fortunate that the Meera shoes in red that I've been seriously lusting after are completely sold out in my size. It's no less painful, but I'm resigned to my fate and am trying to look on the bright side.
The Toronto Fluevog store is on Queen Street, which was particularly nightmarish to bike on yesterday afternoon. Too many cars pulling in and out of parking spots without watching for cyclists. I also couldn't remember exactly where the store was, so I got off the bike at Peter and walked the rest of the way, dodging Friday afternoon fantastic-weather-in-March flanneurs. But then, a miracle happened: there was an empty bike post right in front of the store. It was a sign. The shoes and I were meant to be together.**
Biking home, I wound up following another woman through Trinity-Bellwoods. A group of three guys were blocking the path, and she dinged her bell. They paid no attention, so I dinged my rather more resonant bell. At which point the left-most guy turned and said "Yes? Can I help you?" Seriously? How rude can you be? We very politely forced him to the side of the path and continued on.
Manners, people. It's what's for breakfast.
Total mileage: From my apartment to Teti Salon to Fluevog and back = 7.9km/4.9 miles
So there we are. 7 weeks, 14 tasks recorded. Next up: 30 days of biking. Don't worry, I won't be blogging that stuff. I now return you to the regular irregular posting schedule.
*14 tasks? It's what I like to call overkill.
**I am not usually one of these people that gets all Carrie Bradshaw over clothing, but you have to admit those are some very pretty shoes. They are also now the highest shoes I own. But so comfy.
