Utilitaire-12 task #12: Bike to work... again (via College)
I mentioned a few weeks ago that Google thinks it's faster for me to go along College/Carlton to Jarvis. Filming the commute was the best way for me to time it, or at least I choose to believe that I want the precision I can get from looking at the video as opposed to a stopwatch that I'd probably forget to turn off anyway, even though it's really that I want the fun of editing the movies.
I re-filmed the Harbord St. trip on Tuesday to include the Queen's Park leg and get a true sense of the timing. I admit to some shenanigans with the College video: I filmed it on Wednesday, but it wasn't until I reached Clinton St. that I noticed that I hadn't manged to actually start the camera. Oops. I was going to redo it Thursday, but it was raining. Friday I was running late and couldn't take the time to set up the camera*. I did follow the College route those days to confirm my results, though. I refilmed it this morning on my way to buy tulips**. Saturday morning on College is not exactly the same as a weekday morning, but it's good enough for my purposes. Except that I mucked it up again. I'll redo it... next week, perhaps***.
I've trimmed the video to start where the two routes diverge at Ossington and sped it up 8x.

Result? Google doesn't know what it's talking about. Any time savings won by not going more north than I need to are lost to the extra-long waits at the lights. Plus, there is no room to pass a slower cyclist because the traffic is so heavy. And so large -- holy cow there were a lot of trucks! And do you notice that extra thick line on the bike lane on College St.? Do you notice how they've taken that space out of the bike lane? Not cool.
I think I'll stick with my "inefficient," pretty, relatively quiet route, thank you very much. Although I might take College/Carlton every now and then to shake things up.
So. I have officially completed the twelve tasks of the Utilitaire-12. But there is still another week, and at least one more category to complete. Yes. I'd like to get my hair cut, finally. Which means I must finish my New York pictures. Huh.
Total mileage: From my apartment to Jarvis/Wellesley via College/Carlton & back home via Harbord = 10.4 km/6.8 miles
*Mainly because I finally installed my travel mug holder. I was keeping the mug in my basket, but this is so much better. Except that tea splashes all over my right knee. Adjustments will be made.
**Except the store wasn't open yet.
***I also didn't quite pick the same times. The Harbord commute was done at 8 AM, while the College commute was done 20 minutes later. That could make a bit of a difference in the timing.
