We got in. Maybe we should dance before we get besieged, bedeviled, or beheaded or something.Last Friday was my first year at Fake Prom, and sadly it would also be my last, unless someone takes it over. It was a tonne of fun. Prom without all the teenaged angst. No judgy-judgy. Awesome.

The theme this year was "Enchantment Under the Sea" and costumes are encouraged. We saw the Titanic, lobsters, mermaids, quite a few jelly-fish, several Aqua-men and Marty McFlys, and at least 20 Steve Zissous, as well as quite few people who just glammed up for the evening. I went for themed but pretty.
Yes, you do recognize the white dress of Dîner en Blanc. I said it was multi-use.
It was remarkably hard to find under-the-sea stuff at the dollar store, but I did get a big tub of foam stickers and some air-dry "Magic Clay," which dries kind of squishy. And very light. I wanted to make anchor earrings and starfish. I had no idea how to make anchors or starfish. Dilemma.
Solution? All hail Youtube! I found a wonderful anchor tutorial by this delightful young lady. I love how she says stuff like "you just shape it until you're happy with it..." just like on TV. Hee.
It's a really clear tutorial and my anchors turned out really well, if I do say so myself. I used Sharpie-coloured string for the rope and made a huge mess trying to glue it on with Modge Podge. There's a reason she uses clay for the rope in that tutorial.
There are a few starfish videos, but this one is the least annoying.
I wanted long-armed starfish.

I cut a seaweed belt out of my defunct deck tarp and stuck the foam fish on. I added some tulle leftover from the petticoat as a net. One theme, to go.
The DC looked super dapper, naturally. He got so many compliments on that jacket. Which he made. Bow before him.
Walking to the pre-party (because what would prom be without a pre-party), we got lots of smiles and a few ahoys. That was nothing to what we got walking home at the end of the evening.
The prom itself was so much fun, I didn't get many pictures. The DJs and band played prom hits from the 50s to the 90s, although there was no AC/DC. That was a bit disappointing. But it was great to be back at the Palais Royale.
And a good time was had by all. It seems weirdly appropriate to go to prom the week before school starts.

He MADE that jacket? You know, you shouldn't have included that in this post because all the glory that would have been bestowed on your crafty anchors and starfish have now been transferred over to him....
ReplyDeleteThat's why I put the crafty anchors first. They got all of their deserved 30 s of glory before it went over to the jacket, where it rightfully belongs.
DeleteOh sorry, I should have mentioned, though, that your outfit was very cute!!
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks.
