Physicsgirls in white dresses...

...but no blue satin sashes. Although I could easily add one.

The Saturday before I left for London, I woke up really, really early. I had much to do, but not a lot of it could be done at that early hour. Going back to sleep was not an option. Naturally I decided to make a dress that I didn't need until two weeks after I got back from Paris. I pulled most of it together that morning, but I didn't get around to hemming it until this week.

It's the full skirted version of the Easter Parade dress (still to be blogged) -- Butterick 6582 -- although I decided to not lengthen the waist this time. I also cut it two sizes smaller, since the bust of the green dress is a bit bunchy and I wouldn't notice the change in the full skirt.

I made it from this lovely patterned cotton fabric I bought at Len's Mill Store in Cambridge after the Butterfly Conservatory. I'm also planning a white and red polkadot version for dancing.

I like the slight sheerness of the fabric that makes the leaves stand out when it is next to my skin.

When I bought the fabric, I couldn't remember how much I needed for the dress and bought too little according to the pattern envelope. After some creative laying-out, I managed to get every piece I needed and still have some fabric left over to make a fan and part of a purse. Yay, me!

This dress was made for a special event to be held on August 9, and at first I was afraid it would join the ranks of my one-time-wear dresses. Then I bought a ticket to the Fake Prom, theme "Enchantment Under the Sea," and decided to wear it to that, too. Then I thought it might do for the Tweed Ride, so at least I would get three wears out of it.

When I tried it on, though, I realized it would do for lots of things. Without the petticoat and with a wide brown leather belt, I could easily wear it to work. So it looks like this will be a many-wear dress after all. Excellent.

The wristlet was made from this tutorial on Flamingo Toes. A couple of points about the pattern: the back piece is backwards, so cut one, wrong side up; the inset pieces are about half an inch too long, but are easily trimmed. I only had a 9" zipper (left over from switching out the zippers on the Dress), so it wouldn't go all the way around the side, and I installed it so that the zipper pull was closer to the handle. I really like it and several of my dearest might find themselves with one of these at Christmas.

I made the lining using hot pink fabric, because I like the idea of white opening up to a bright colour.

I made the petticoat using (mostly) this tutorial from SugarDale, adding an underlining and elastic waistband. However, I did a really slap-dash job, which meant that one of the tiers was about 3 inches too long, so the whole thing dipped far below the dress. I've fixed that, and it's good enough for Thursday, but I'll add extra tulle to make it poofier for Fake Prom.

Meanwhile, here is Lucy helping me sew the petticoat.
