So I was hoping to go out and get some stuff done yesterday, but the falling snow and reports of people sliding around in it made me say: nah. Instead, I ventured out today. Most of the stores I need to visit are closed on Sundays, and I don't know what's going to be open tomorrow, but I managed to get some stuff done, although I was concerned that the streets would still be slippery. And that my appendages would freeze to death.

Overall observation: a beautiful, sunny, oh-my-sweet-lord-but-that-wind-is-nippy day. I've been having issues with my rear brake cable freezing when it gets below -5°C and today was no different. I can eventually get it working, but then it won't let go and I have to deal with the drag and some horrendous squealing. So I decided to just bike extra-slowly with only one brake over the hard-packed snow. Also? My appendages did freeze.
First stop was the library. I haven't renewed my card in years and I need it to complete the other challenge I've taken on. It took a while for my fingers to warm up enough to sign my shiny new card.

For the next three errands, I went up the street to the sad, sad Galleria. It's one of those places built in the 70s where the inside is brown brick and tile to make it seem the inside is really outside or something but instead it's just depressing and dark. The LCBO and Pet Valu are outside the mall, though, and still hopping. I acquired beverages for dinner and food for Lucy. You know, groceries. I alsopaid hommage said hello to Essie, the attention-hogging resident kitty. Of the Pet Valu, not the LCBO. But they should get on that.

In between, I went to the Portuguese bakery next door to warm up. Have you ever had a pastel de nata, or Portuguese egg tart? So. much. yum. I wound up getting a milk tart instead, because that's what they had. Also tasty. I love my neighbourhood.

I loaded up my basket to head home. I used my bungee net to keep the purse in the front, because the last time I used the spring clip on the rear rack, my purse fell out and I didn't notice for several minutes. That was in the park, though, and I really didn't want to take any chances on the road.

I took Dufferin, aka via des craters, home*, then thawed my feet and fingers. And will not venture forth again until I have to.
Errandonnée tally:
Library: Bloor/Gladstone (1 km/0.6 mi)
Grocery store: LCBO (1.1 km/0.8 mi)
Coffee/Dessert: Happy Bakery and Pastry (seriously!)(er... same location)
Grocery store: Pet Valu (2.0 km/1.3 mi)
Mileage left: 10.5 km/6.9 mi
8 categories completed, so all I have to do are three more errands, then I'm done!
*I really hope they redo that street this year. It's beyond overdue.

GOOD NEWS~~ Dufferin is scheduled to be repaved this summer! So write to Councillor Bailao and ask that bike lanes be painted in.
ReplyDelete... because according to her EA, the reason they've left the road with all these pot holes is because they act as a traffic calming measure. So once the street is paved smooth, the motorists are going to treat this street like a highway - FOR SURE!
Also! Congrats on getting so many of your Enrondonée challenges completed. I bike around yesterday too, and Andre may not forgive me for forcing him to ride around with me.
I will, but given her voting record on bike lanes, I'm not holding out hope.
