In which PhysicsGirl enjoys wearing scarves in the middle of summer

composite scarves
Four scarves, that is. And one sneaky winter scarf. Only two of which are currently completely finished, but if I wait to finish all of them I will never put this post up.

cream & beige infinity scarf
This is a cream and beige striped version of the infinity scarf from Love of Crochet Holiday 2012; it's the same pattern I made J for Christmas last year. It's made from Katia Mississippi 3 cotton/acrylic in cream and beige; don't ask me the colour numbers, because they got mixed up when I was making J's scarf last November. I stash-busted a little too effectively and finished the cream 1/4 of the way through the final stripe, so the beige starts a wee bit early on the last round. I probably should have started with beige in the centre. However. Crocheted möbius strip! Next up? Lorenz manifold.

Second and third are versions of the Sunny Scarf from Love of Crochet Spring Preview 2012. The blue is from trying to use up all the leftover Katia Mississippi 3 from J's scarf. I was not successful. And this thing is nearly 2 m long! It is ridiculously long, my friends. Changing colours seemed to make this scarf take twice as long to make as I expected, although that could also have been due to having to frog it due to the error in the pattern which made the scarf get narrower at each stripe*. And also because this thing is long.
long
I became kind of enamored of the tangerine model version, even though that's not usually a colour I wear. I'm making it up to be about 2/3 the desired length - only 9 repeats instead of 14. Much less trip-inducing, I hope. It's Butterfly Super-10 in mercerized cotton, colour 3540. It's a bit narrower than it should be, because even though I started out with the suggested 6.5 mm hook, I had to switch to a 6 mm hook partway through the second repeat as the first hook was pushed by a vengeful kitty or kicked by an absent-minded teacher into the yawning crevice between the tile floor and baseboard in my kitchen and I cannot get it out.**

The fourth is a combination of the previous and another pattern, and is therefore a PhysicsGirl original. Woo! I'm using Debbie Bliss Amalfi, colour 32018. It's 70% cotton, 15% viscose, 10% linen, and 5% silk, which is a bit fancy for a mere scarf, but it was on sale and I couldn't find a cotton in a green I liked as well as this soft sage. I wanted a green lacy spring scarf, but I really don't want to do yet another Sunny scarf. First I went with the River Scarf pattern from Interweave Crochet Accessories 2011. And it turns out this is the wrong weight for that pattern; I wasn't paying attention when I wrote my shopping list. I made it up partway with a larger hook and dithered for a while as to whether I should keep going. It was quite thick, which is not what I'm looking for in a spring/summer scarf. Incidentally, that pattern has a wee mistake in chain count at the beginning, because as you know 32 is not a multiple of 6. Anyway. Frogged it. I liked the openwork part of Sunny and I remembered the treble cross-stitch scarf I made F for Christmas, so I pulled together a hybrid of the two patterns, which I shall call something kooky like Spring Wave scarf or Minerva or something***. It has four rows of alternating cross-trebles separated by two rows of single. I'm liking how it's coming out so far. If anyone is interested, I can post a more detailed pattern when I have finished it.

And finally, because it's been hanging around all fall/winter and I haven't given it its moment in the spotlight, is my first version of the Ramses II scarf from Love of Crochet Fall 2012, which is what I made Aunt R2 last Christmas. Except that I used Lamb's Pride Bulky in oatmeal, and two skeins at once because I was following the pattern. It is super thick. This pattern is the reason I bought the magazine in the first place. I made it right after I bought the wool in October but didn't quite finish it, since I'm afraid of blocking. I still wore the heck out of it, though, using a vintage gold leaf pin to secure it. It only took me until the end of February to buy buttons for it and it will probably take me another few months to block the thing and sew them on.

Next up: I'd like to sew the buttons on my Saturn sweater so I can blog it (oh, and wear it properly, although lack of buttons has not stopped me so far). I'm also crocheting a spring sweater**** and I just bought a bunch of lovely new clothes!

(Some assembly required.)

Once I have finished these scarves and have had time to take more detailed pictures, I'll post a link. Watch this space.

*Fortunately, I ignored the bit about repeating the stripes twice -- I'm fairly certain I will not be buying any more LoC because of the constant mistakes and lack of errata on the website for the ones I find. Well, that and the twee projects. Why would you want to crochet a flower pot!? Anyway, the error comes from going from the lacy dc V's to the sc crochet rows. Because you stitch in the spaces between the stitches, you lose a stitch. I just added one back in the middle of the row -- once I realized that adding it at the end made the scarf bulge even more at the transition.

**God, I wonder what else has fallen down there...

***Because, why not?

***Yes, I am crocheting 3 things at once. No, I am in no way procrastinating all that marking I have to do.
