Urban weekending: Errandonnées #5-9

Errandonnee 2016
This past weekend was very urbany. It included shopping, a quasi-event, and brunch.

Errandonnée month means it's time to get my library card renewed. These days I've mostly been downloading ebooks, which is excellent for borrowing library books for the completely lazy because if you forget to pick them up or return them they just return themselves, no fine accruing. Alas, you still have to renew your card in person, so yesterday I set off up the road. It was one of those days were you feel that Spring is definitely about to happen; 17°C, sunny, and nary a curb snowbank in sight.

Afterwards I went to get groceries. I usually walk to the store since it's not far and I can use my trundle buggy to load up with cans, but in the spirit of the errandonnée I wanted to see what I could pack into my pannier & baskets. I should have brought the DC's basket pannier with me because this was a bit awkward, but I'm pleased with the bungee net-toilet paper solution.

This morning, we woke up to less pleasant weather: overcast and the temperature had dropped by about 10°. No matter. We headed off to brunch at the Artful Dodger with P1 and my cousins D and R. We were nearly stymied by the troupes amassing on St. George for the St. Patrick's Day parade, but biking means you can occasionally become a pedestrian and we emerged triumphant. And early. The Artful Dodger is a pub, so brunch really means "some kind of eggs, probably Benny" which is what I had. The bike parking situation is not fabulous, but we managed to use this rail and its anti-skateboarding device. It's almost the perfect height.

After yummy food, we headed down Sherborne to Sugar Beach for the inaugural Sugar Shack. We didn't stay long, because there was not much to do but wait in line for an hour or two for maple taffy. Which, you know, we could do at home, had we the will to make some snow. And it's really the wrong weather for this sort of thing. I hope they sort it out for next year, because I like the idea.

Anyway, I can't wait until they extend the Sherborne lanes all the way to the end and work out a better connection to the pretty awesome newish Martin Goodman trail extension — a separated (mostly), bidirectional bike lane. Oh, it's nice, my friends. Aside from the pedestrians who cluelessly wander into the lane because it's at the same level as the sidewalk and god forbid people look up to see if they're stepping into the path of anything and hey can't you hear this bell dinging, it's a thing of beauty because you no longer have to ride on the hell that was the bike lane on Queen's Quay. I'll take clueless pedestrians any day.

On our way home, we stopped off at Affordable Textiles — which I did not realize was open on Sundays and I kind of wish I didn't as this could be dangerous knowledge — because the DC needed some silk for an 18th century wig he is making* and I needed to get some fabric for the 20s dress I'm making for Electroswing on Friday. Shopping on Queen West on a Sunday in March means all the available bike rings you could hope for, which is a nice change.

So close to the end! I've got three more errands to do, and I'm probably going to do them on the last day because I'm embracing the laziness of this leave and doubt I will leave the apartment tomorrow.

*Cuz that how he roll. It was at a point a week ago where he totally looks like Thranduil minus the giant elk. And now I keep finding long grey hairs all over which seriously freaks me out until I realize they are not mine. Husbands. Gotta love 'em.**

**And I totally do.
